Jerusalem tower
Description:
The Jerusalem Tower in Trier, Germany, is considered the oldest building in the complex called the Walderdorf Palace. It was built in the XI century and had 8 more twins all over Trier, but the only one survived to this day. A tower of five floors was built, but in 1869, after a severe fire, two upper floors were destroyed, and the first was completely covered. It was only in the twentieth century that excavations began, as a result of which evidence of medieval architecture was found: spiral staircases, massive pillars, windows with deep niches and much more.
Also after restoration work, specially decorated vaults were found, turning into walls. This suggests that in the Middle Ages the building was used as a chapel, and only then, after strengthening the walls, establishing several layers of plaster, it was used as an urban fortification. Also, the stability of the tower contributed to the special laying of bricks, which in its style repeated the ancient Roman buildings. To date, the Jerusalem Tower has been completely restored, its appearance is ideally suited to the style of building the city itself.
