Trira Jesuit Church
Jesuitenstrase 13, Trier, Germany
Description:
The Jesuit Church of Trier was established as a Franciscan church in 1228 and remained so until 1570. The church was lit in honor of the Holy Trinity and handed over to the Jesuits after the monastery was dissolved. It continued to exist in this status for another two centuries, until 1773, when the Jesuit order was dissolved.
In the church there is a crypt in which in 1635 was buried Friedrich Spee von Langenfeld – a famous German poet and writer who lived in Trier for his last years. In 1779 the building was used as a seminary church. Then in 1795-1798 the church served as a warehouse for French troops. After that, the building was continually handed over to the various communities of the city, and finally, from 1857, the church again became part of the seminary.
As a result of the restoration carried out in 1988-1993, various elements of the interior were restored, such as the altar of the Virgin Mary and the elegant vault.
