Alte Meinbrücke Bridge
Alte Mainbrucke, 97070 Wurzburg, Germany
Description:
The old Alte Meinbrücke bridge over Main connects the citadel and the city center, is one of the symbols of Würzburg. Before the appearance of the bridge, there was a ferry at this place.
The first stones of the bridge were laid in the VIII century, but mainly wood was used in construction. The bridge was twice damaged by the trunks of trees that floated along the river during floods (raising the water in the river Main) in 1342 and in 1442.
The stone bridge appeared on this site only in the period from 1473-1543. At both ends of the bridge until the XVIII century, for reasons of defense, stood a massive gate.
The length of the bridge is 179 meters. The Alte Meinbrücke Bridge is very similar to the Charles Bridge in Prague. However, if the Prague bridge is decorated with as many as 30 figures, then the Würzburg bridge is only 12.
