Museum of Cultural Memory
Oskar-Laredo-Platz 1, 97080 Wurzburg, Germany
About the company:
The Museum of Cultural Memory has been operating in Würzburg since February 2004. Until that time, the collection exhibited here was part of the municipal gallery of the city. The museum is focused on contemporary art. The main directions presented here were impressionism, expressionism and avant-garde.
The place for the museum was chosen very unusual - an abandoned warehouse of the old port. The architects were able to create an exhibition space with an area of more than three and a half thousand square meters, full of air (ceiling height 12 meters!) and light. At the same time, the exterior of the building was preserved, the facade and ancient windows were carefully restored. The building itself is a monument, an example of industrial architecture of the early XX century. In 12 halls, each of which is divided into three tiers, there are paintings, sculptures and installations.
The art of the XIX and XX centuries is represented by the works of artists whose names are directly associated with Würzburg or Lower Franconia. The collection began to be created in 1941, and still in the selection of works for the exhibition, the museum is guided by this principle. The gallery exhibits paintings by Max Slevogt, Robert Breuer, Joseph Oppenheimer and many others.
A separate part of the museum exposition is 250 exhibits of the collection of Samuel Peter Ruppert, which he and his wife collected for more than 30 years. The six halls show the development of art in Europe after 1945. Special attention is paid to various artistic trends, new visual forms and a non-standard approach to the use of space and color.
