Hamelin

Hamelin - the city of fairy tales and fairy-tale city

Description:

To the left and right of the Weser River, in the hilly terrain of Weserbergland, is the world-famous city of Hamelin. It is located on the German tourist route "Fairytale Way". Here, not far from Cinderella and Baron Munchausen, for many centuries lives in his house the darkest apprentice of German fairy tales - Pied Piper. Every day 3 times a day there is a presentation of the legend of the Hamel Pied Piper on the facade of the Wedding House in one of the central squares of the city.

For many years, Hamelin has been an international center of tourism and annually about 4 million tourists come here for one day to get acquainted with this city of Pied Piper, with its unique history and architecture. All the attractions of interest to tourists are just a few minutes walk from each other.

Romantic alleys, medieval streets and squares filled with history and modernity are the traditions and passion of the inhabitants of Hamelin.

The Weser Renaissance – a North German variant of the Italian style of architecture – a special style of architecture that arose here in the 16th and early 17th centuries, primarily influenced the urban landscape of Hamelin. A real eye bait is the facade of the Pied Piper House in the historic Old Town. Built by the mayor Ahrends in 1602–1603, the house is one of the most impressive buildings of the Weser Renaissance style. The Pied Piper himself never lived in this house, but the house has been named after him since around 1900 because of an inscription on the inner wall that recalls the legend of the rat-catcher. This is the oldest story of the Pied Piper, which tells that on June 26, 1284, 130 children were kidnapped from Hamelin by a rat-catcher with a flute. Today in this house is a restaurant with dishes such as “tasty rat tails” and “rat killer”, which can be drunk with incredibly tasty local liquor.

Hamelin is listed by UNESCO as a city of national cultural heritage.

And if you want to visit the homeland of Baron Hieronymus von Munchausen, then his house is located in the neighboring town of Bodenverder.
