Excursion: Meteora Orthodox shrines (12 hours)
Description:
One of the most popular places in Greece is the monastic state of Saint Meteora, which is located on narrow cliffs. It consists of 6 monasteries and every year attracts more and more pilgrims and tourists from all over the world.
On the Thessaly Plain, near Kalambaka, there are rocks that admire their size, which experts consider the rarest geological phenomenon. Legend has it that the first monastery was founded by the monk Athanasius, who came from the sacred Mount Athos, and received the name Platilotos, which means flat stone, and the place where the monastery is located was called Meteora (soaring in the air).
The monasteries themselves were built on steep rocks and cause delight and admiration when contemplating even experienced travelers. To get there, in our days, steps were knocked directly into the rocks and hinged bridges were made for more convenient movement of monks around the state. Visiting male and female temples during the tour, you can learn about the daily life of monks and see sacred relics, unique manuscripts of elders and icons.
The entrance to Meteora for people in open clothes is closed, this should be remembered when going on the road. It will also be informative to stop near the monument to the Spartan king Leonid, who, not far from here, with his 300 Spartans, took a bloody and cruel battle with the Persian army, in which he showed what the Greek people are capable of.
