National Archaeological Museum.
Description:
The museum is a treasury of Ancient Greece, the cradle of civilization, the foundations of European culture. Interest in it arises from the first acquaintance with the building, restored after the Second World War. The exhibits collected from all over Greece are exhibited in chronological order and combined into thematic groups, which gives us the opportunity to observe the development of civilization on the territory of Greece from the depth of centuries. Each period is represented by its masterpieces. Mycenaean - gold jewelry, including the mask of Agamemnon, found by Schliemann during excavations in the ancient city of Mycenae. Geometric to Dipilu amphora. Archaic - sculptures of koros and kuros. The hall of the classical period, when the Hellenic culture reached its highest point of development, is dominated by a statue of the god Poseidon, made by the sculptor Kalimidis. The image of the sea god conveys the divine beauty of the human body. Many tombstones of the Hellenistic period, works of the Roman period, frescoes from the island of Sandorini aged three and a half millennia, the remains of a ship that sank along with cargo and equipment near the island of Antikyphira - these are just a few of what we will see in the museum.
Benaki Museum.
The museum is named after its founder, Emmanuel Benaki. His heart still rests in the museum, to which he devoted his whole life, gave the property and presented all this to the people of the Hellenic people. His example was followed by well-known collectors - heirs of the fighters for the liberation of Greece from Turkish domination - donating masterpieces of art, family relics, portraits, rare books, manuscripts, historical archives. A significant number of valuable gifts significantly complemented the collection of the museum.
This is the richest museum in Greece. Each of the halls of the museum gives the visitor a meeting with unique exhibits.
An abundance of folk art objects, gold jewelry, diamonds, rubies, the legacy of the royal and aristocratic families, charming portraits of members of the royal family. The museum is located in a neoclassical style building. Its architecture is richly decorated both from the outside and from the inside. It used to be the home of Emmanuel Benaki.
