Nicky Apteros Temple

Acropolis, Theorias, Athens 10558

Description:

The temple of Niki Apteros is located on the territory of the Acropolis. Named after the goddess of victory. The date of construction is 427-424 BC. The Greeks prayed that Greece would win the Peloponnesian War. This building is the first to be seen by visitors to the Acropolis. The gate is located behind the temple, which is somewhat surprising. For a long time the shrine was indestructible, although military fortifications were built here during the Turkish conquest. It was partially destroyed. Reconstruction was carried out in the mid-19th century. On the facade of the building there are columns, reliefs. The sculpture of the goddess Niki stands in the center of the temple with a helmet and a grenade. This Nike has no wings, so that victory does not fly away from the Greeks. The temple is also called by the name of Niki Bezwinga. You can get by metro to the station "Acropol", or on foot along the pedestrian street Dionysiou Areopagitou.
