Description:
Tzisdarakis Monastery is located in one of the oldest squares of Athens – Monastiraki Square. This building of the Ottoman period, dates back to the 18th century. Built thanks to the governor of Athens Tsisdarakis, in whose honor the monastery is named. He initiated the transfer of columns from the temple of Zeus. He did not receive the permission of the Sultan, for which he was fined and removed from office. After the Greek Revolution of 1821, the mosque was destroyed. It was restored in 1915 and was mainly used as a museum. Another restoration took place in 1981 after a strong earthquake. Today it houses the Museum of Greek Folk Art. There are also regular exhibitions in the room. There are many shops and souvenir shops nearby. You can get by city bus or metro to the station "Monastyraki".
