Roman Agora

Panos 6, Athina 105 55, Greece

Description:

The Roman Agora dates from the first century BC, is a continuation of the ancient agora. It was donated by Julius Caesar and Augustus. Caesar himself was involved in the construction plan. The structure was in the form of a rectangular atrium measuring 111 by 98 meters, surrounded by a colonnade, warehouses and arches. From the point of view of architecture – a sample of Doric style.

Until now, colonnades of Pentelic marble, the ruins of a public toilet, the remains of a Roman fountain have been preserved. On the west side is the entrance to the agora, called the Gate of Athena Archegetis.

On the openings there are inscriptions in Greek. In ancient times, the agora was an important place for citizens – a commercial and political center.

Agora is located on Panos Street, which can be reached by bus 025, tram or metro to the Monastiraki stop.
