Panathinaikos Stadium

Vassileos Konstantinou Avenue, Pangrati, Athens, Greece

Description:

This representative stadium in Athens is unique in several ways. It is the oldest in the world, reconstructed from the ruins of an ancient Greek sports facility. It is shaped like a horseshoe and made entirely of white marble. And it was here, amidst this marble splendor, that the first Games took place, which gave rise to the Olympic movement, which does not stop to this day. It was back in 1896.

The predecessor of the stadium Panathinaikos was known before our era. The choice of a place for such a structure was facilitated by nature itself. Here is an almost perfectly flat valley between two hills near the river. At first it was wooden, later it was also built in marble. In its space accommodated about 50 thousand spectators. The ruins of this ancient building have been restored as an Olympic stadium. Already in the 19th century, it was once again lined with marble, the same one used 2,400 years ago to build the Parthenon at the Acropolis.

Nowadays, the stadium is considered more of a landmark than a sports facility. You can even come here with a tour. But from time to time there are special events. For example, concerts of world pop stars.
