Museum of Greek folk musical instruments
1-3, Diogenous Str., Plaka, Athens, Greece
About the company:
The Museum of Greek Folk Musical Instruments is located in Athens, the capital of Greece, and is entirely dedicated to the history and development of traditional Greek musical instruments. The museum also has a center for the study of ethnic music.
The museum is housed in the former mansion of George Lassanis, built in 1842. It was opened in 1991 with the support of the Ministry of Culture of Greece and has been under the auspices of the state ever since. The main museum collection was provided by the Greek musicologist Phyvos Anoianakis - the researcher spent almost half a century collecting it.
In total, the museum has more than 1,200 musical instruments, the oldest of which dates back to the mid-eighteenth century. Each exhibit is accompanied by a high-quality audio recording with an example of the game on it, and any visitor to the museum can listen to how this or that instrument sounds.
Since its opening, the Museum of Greek Folk Musical Instruments has enjoyed well-deserved popularity among tourists. The rich collection of the museum should appeal to everyone who is even slightly interested in the history of the development of European music.
