Museum of Numismatics
2 Panepistimiou Street, Athens, Greece
About the company:
The Numismatics Museum is one of the most remarkable and significant Greek museums. It is located in the heart of Athens and owns the world’s largest collection of coins.
The Museum of Numismatics was founded in 1838 and is one of the oldest museums in Greece. For a long time the museum was located in the building of the National Library, then the exhibition was moved to the Athens Academy. And only in 1984, the Museum of Numismatics had its own building - "Ilio Melatron", the former residence of the famous archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann. The old mansion in neoclassical style was the best suited to accommodate the rich collection of the museum.
In total, the Museum of Numismatics presents more than 600,000 exhibits. Mostly these are coins of different eras, but there are also medals, various seals, stamps and some precious stones. The collected collection vividly illustrates the evolution of the coinage of metal money, starting from the 14th century BC and ending with modernity. The museum also contains a huge library of 12,000 profile books and catalogs.
The Athens Museum of Numismatics is a paradise for all collectors of ancient coins and ordinary people interested in the history of money. The museum is very popular with tourists and receives hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
