Museum of Shadow Theatre "Spasario" by Eugenios Spasaris

Kastalia Square, Maroussi, Athens 99920, Greece

About the company:

The Greek shadow theater was formed relatively recently - in the XIX century, during the assimilation and Hellenization of the Turkish people in Greece. For example, the most popular hero of the Greek theater of shadows, Karagiosis, whose name is now synonymous with the theater of shadows, is none other than Karagoz ("black eye", tour.), the hero of the Turkish theater of shadows. Nevertheless, the folk Greek shadow theater is very popular and loved in the homeland. This was the reason for the creation of the Museum of Shadow Theatre in the suburb of Athens, Maroussi.

In 1991, Eugenios Spasaris, a well-known Greek artist, proposed to the municipality of Maroussi to open a museum that would capture the history of the emergence and development of the shadow theater. In such a museum, according to the author, the visitor could see not only the shadows cast by the dolls, but also the dolls themselves, their authors, the process of creating a theatrical performance and the work of artists.

In June 1995, the restoration of a beautiful building in the neoclassical style was completed in Castalias Square, and on June 22, the Museum of the Spasario Shadow Theater entered the building. Since 1996, the museum has been conducting educational activities, inviting schoolchildren and students to various programs. After the annual number of visitors to the museum exceeded 15,000 people, the territory of the museum was expanded. Now the city is proud of its museum, the only one of its kind, preserving for a generation the cultural heritage of the popular theater and its protagonist - Karagioz.
