Xyropotam Monastery
Moni Agiou Pavlou 630 87, Greece
Description:
One of the oldest Orthodox monasteries of Xyropotam is located on Mount Athos. The monastery is dedicated to the forty martyrs of Sebaste. The order for its construction was given by Princess Pulcheria in the fifth century.
Since ancient times, Xyropotamus has been one of the richest and most prosperous monasteries on the Holy Mountain. Around the sixteenth century, the monastery suffered misfortune - it was badly damaged during a powerful earthquake. Subsequently, its restoration was carried out by Andronik Paleolog.
Today there are 60 inhabitants in the monastery. The main relic of the monastery is a cross from the Life-Giving Tree - the same one on which Jesus Christ was crucified.
