Mount Athos

Russian Monastery of St. Panteleimon on Athos

Greece, Mount Athos

Description:

The Russian Monastery of St. Panteleimon on Mount Athos is also known as Rossikon or New Russik. It is an architectural monument and at the same time one of the 20 active monasteries in Greece on Mount Athos. In the nineteenth century, the monastery bells were the largest in Greece.

This monastery, like all other Athos monasteries, is a patriarchal stavropegic and is subject to the canonical jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. In our time, the Russian Monastery of St. Panteleimon is on the 19th place in the hierarchy of St. Panteleimon monasteries.

The real treasure of the monastery is the library, which in 1959 was badly damaged during a fire in 1959. Despite the great losses, the monastery library has more than 20,000 valuable books and manuscripts.
