The castle of the Franks, or, as it is sometimes called, the monastery of Zigou, located in the Greek city of Athos, is truly a unique place. It is the only monastery in Athos that women are allowed to visit. Zigu Monastery is located 40 meters from the border of Athos. The first mention of it occurs in 942 AD, making it one of the oldest monasteries. The monastery was dedicated to the Prophet Elijah. The monastery is located 2 km from modern Uranopolis. Since there is no transport connection to this place, the only option is to get by hiking trails. Trident signs - route markers for tourists - will help not to stray from the trail.
