28is Oktovriou 24-46, Aghios Nikolaos 72100, Greece
Description:
The island of Crete is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Greece. There are very few towns on the island. And one of them, a city large enough for the island, with a population of 19,500 people is Agios Nikolaos. This city has existed since the XIII century, and it was built by the Venetians. Agios Nikolaos means “Saint Nicholas”.
In this city there is a street that leads to Lake Voulismeni. It's called the street on October 28. And differs from others in that it is a completely pedestrian street, there are no cars and their busy traffic. In Crete, the day of October 28 is celebrated, so called Oha Day. This is the day when the Greeks refused to side with Germany and Italy in 1940, and they said no. This street is also famous for the monument of Roussos Kunduros, an outstanding politician Agios Nikolaos, one of the leaders of the resistance of the island, who died at the hands of German fascists in 1944.
The monument is a bronze sculpture of a man in full height. The architects, to emphasize that this politician participated in the Resistance Movement and was executed, dressed him in the robe of a prisoner of German concentration camps. Locals honor the memory of this man, so there are always many flowers near the monument.
