Temple of Apollo at Delphi
Description:
The Temple of Apollo in the Greek city of Delphi is now the ruins of an ancient temple and the main local attraction. It was built in the VI-IV centuries BC. Studies have shown that from the outside the temple was richly decorated with gold. Legends say that the place for construction was not chosen by chance, because on one of the slopes of Mount Parnassus lived the god Apollo.
The greatest fame of the temple brought the Delphic oracle, the heyday of which occurred in the VII-V centuries BC. In ancient times, in this place priests were offered daily sacrifices to Apollo. According to one version, temples were built on places where poisonous fumes come out of the ground, which killed sacrificed birds. However, scientists have not been able to find such places.
The city of Delphi and the temple of Apollo are located about 180 km from the capital of Greece – Athens. You can visit these places both as part of the excursion group and independently. You can come by rented car.
