Iberian Monastery
athos peninsula, nome of Halkidiki, Greece
Description:
Iberian Monastery is the third most important among the monasteries of the holy Mount Athos. Its founder and author of the project is called John Iversky, a native of Georgia. The monastery dates back to 980. Rejecting the position of royal adviser, John became a monk and settled in this place. Unfortunately, during the long history of its existence, the monastery burned several times, and often the buildings were destroyed to the ground.
Each time it was restored with the financial support of several countries. It stores a large number of relics of saints, so the Iberian monastery is one of the most famous objects of pilgrims. Moreover, there are more than 150 miraculous icons.
There are 15 chapels in the monastery. The architecture reminds of Georgia - a pheston-shaped dome of the main temple, cells of monks with suspended covered balconies, an ancient paving stone in the courtyard. In the monastery library there is a book of Psalms, which was presented to the monastery by Peter the Great.
In a separate temple is the famous Iberian icon of the Mother of God, dating from the beginning of our era. You can get to the mountain from anywhere on the peninsula by taxi or city bus (to Uranopolis). Having reached the foot of the mountain, you need to climb on foot.
