Description:

Grigoriat Monastery is the seventeenth monastery located on the southwestern part of the holy Mount Athos. It dates back to the 14th century, named after its founder, the monk Gregory. Historical sources about it have almost not survived, the archives died in fires. Several times the monastery was destroyed by pirates, restored on the donations of Christians.

This monastery is active and is home to 70 monks. In the library you can see ancient manuscripts, printed books of different times, sacred utensils and clothes. Surrounding the monastery is a multi-tiered fortress wall. There are several churches on the territory. Also, pilgrims are attracted by a part of the Life-Creating Cross and the miraculous icon of the Mother of God Paleological.

You can get to the mountain from anywhere on the peninsula by taxi or city bus (to Uranopolis). Having reached the foot of the mountain, you need to climb on foot.
