Trimartiri Church

ooh Khalidon, Hanya, Crete Island, Greece

Description:

Trimartiri Church in Chania is one of the famous Orthodox cathedrals on the island of Crete. In ancient times there was a church here. But in the 14th century a new temple was built instead. He did not serve for a long time for his intended purpose. During the occupation of the Turks, a soap factory became here. But by permission of the Turkish Pasha Chania, the icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary was transferred to the dungeon, and a candle was lit in front of her daily. According to legend, in the middle of the 19th century, the Virgin Mary appeared to the soap factory worker Cherkakis with a request to take her from this place. This person actually left and took the icon. At the same time, the pasha’s child fell into the well and was severely injured. Pasha began to pray to the Virgin Mary for his healing. And a miracle happened, the child survived, and Pasha himself began to build a new temple on this place in gratitude. The date of its completion is 1860. In appearance, it is a three-nave basilica with three aisles (this explains the name of the temple). Every year on November 21, grand celebrations are held in honor of the Nativity of the Virgin.

The Church of the Virgin Mary (Trimartiri) is located on Khalidon Street in the old part of Chania. You can get to the city by plane, there is an airport, or by intercity buses.
