Chania

Port of Venice

Chania, O. Crete, Greece

Description:

The Venetian port of Chania is rightly called the Venetian pearl of the island of Crete. In fact, two cultures are intertwined here – Turkish and Venetian. Different architectural styles coexist nearby and give this place a unique flavor. The port was built in the thirteenth century and was considered the center of business life. Although the city was ruled by the Turks for a long time, the port itself has remained virtually unchanged.

Today it is a crowded, noisy place, much like Venice. There is a unique atmosphere, narrow streets, stunning architecture. It is a kind of open-air museum. Mosaics of port facilities shine in the sun, creating a unique play of light. There are many cozy cafes and restaurants. The city has an international airport, so getting here by air from any major Greek city is not a problem. Local airlines Olympic and Aegean Airlines fly here every day.
