Olive Tree Museum

Eparchiaki Odos Polemarchiou-Vouves, Platanias, Greece

About the company:

The Olive Tree Museum tells the story of the olive industry. It is opened in honor of the oldest tree in the world, which is more than 3 thousand years old, and is located in the village of Ano Vuves, about 30 kilometers west of Chania.

The tree grows near the museum and, despite its age, still bears fruit. The circumference of its trunk is more than 12 meters, and its diameter exceeds 3 meters. In early Christian times, it was considered sacred, and since 2004 it has been an important attribute of the Olympics - traditional wreaths for winners are made from its branches.

In the museum you can learn all about the culture of growing olive trees and see the tools used for growing, woodworking and storing olives. Among them: sickles, plows, sprinklers, ceramic vessels, press equipment and much more.
