Martinengo Tower
Description:
Martinengo Tower is the southernmost part of the fortifications of the city of Heraklion, which is located on the Greek island of Crete. The fortress was besieged many times throughout its history: both the Crusaders and the Turks took it, and once the island was sold to Venice.
Here is the humble grave of Nikos Kazantzakis, a classic of Greek literature. World fame brought him the novel “The Last Temptation”, where the author portrayed Jesus Christ as a simple carpenter who was in love with Mary Magdalene and was her lover. Of course, the church did not like this interpretation of biblical events, the writer was anathema. Moreover, after his death, the clergy forbade him to be buried in the city. Then the residents of Heraklion, who literally idolized Kazagndzakis, buried him in the fortress, which is still the highest point of the city. On the grave are inscribed the words of the writer, who have already become legendary: “I do not hope for anything.” I'm not afraid of anything. I am free.
