Heraklion

Lyon Square

Description:

Lyon Square is the heart of Heraklion. Here, tourists and locals share a small space around the fountain, exchanging news and just talking peacefully. Lyon Square is a universal platform for communication. Negotiations are held at the fountains, young people make appointments with each other, pensioners come here just to sit on the street and get some air. By the way, the fountain, consisting of eight baths, decorated with figures associated with ancient Greek mythology - nymphs, tritoi, sea dragons and dolphins, is named after the most outstanding person of Crete - Platheius Elefteraiou Venizelou. Near the main pool of the fountain sit four lions. The fountain was built in honor of the solution by the Venetians of the problem of supplying the city with drinking water, after the construction of a viaduct near Mount Yuchtas.
