Heraklion

Venetian fortress of Heraklion

Iraklio 712 02, Greece

Description:

Kules Fortress is an architectural monument of the period of Venetian rule on the island. It is a defensive structure built to protect the city and port from the sea. The fortress was built in the XIV century, but was repeatedly rebuilt due to the negative influence of sea waves.

The current appearance of the building acquired in 1540, after another reconstruction. The walls of the fortress are a construction of huge stone blocks, the foundation for which is a rock. The fortress covers an area of 3600 square meters and previously included living rooms, warehouses, a prison, a lighthouse and places for cannons. Today, the port of the fortress is used by fishermen and yachtsmen, and the fortress itself is the pearl of the city and its landmark.
