St. George's Gate
Description:
The gate of St. George until recently was in a ruined state under the central square of the city. But now the gates have been restored and are part of the system of city fortifications and a landmark of the city.
The gate was built in 1565 and was part of the city wall built during Venetian rule over the island. Also preserved stone steps, part of the wall and a gallery with a domed roof. On the wall is a memorial plaque from 1565, which is decorated with coats of arms and initials of the Venetian nobility. Previously, a relief medallion was also installed on the gate, which is now stored in the Museum of Crete. The Gate Gallery is often used for exhibitions, presentations and other events.
