Rusanu Monastery
Description:
The Rusanu convent, also named after St. Barbara, was founded as a male monastery in 1388. There are several versions of the origin of its name. After some time, the monastery was almost destroyed, and on its ruins in 1527, the brothers Maximus and Joasaph of Janina built a new monastery, which has survived to the present time.
The monastery is located on a high rock, on a very limited area of construction, and is a small four-storey complex. The main church in the monastery is the Church of Transfiguration. It is rich in paintings of the post-Byzantine era, made by masters of the Cretan school. Of particular value are the frescoes “Suffering of the Saints” and “Ascension to the Throne”.
