Varlaam Monastery - Monastery of All Saints

Greece, Thessaly.

Description:

The history of the foundation of the monastery began around 1350, when a monk named Varlaam climbed the rock and began its development. He built three churches, a cell, a water tank, and lived all his life alone on this rock. After his death, no one lived on the rock for about two centuries.

In 1518, the monk brothers Theophan and Nectarius first climbed the rock to restore the Church of the Three Saints, built by Barlaam. Later, the brothers decided to stay on the rock and gradually other monks began to come to them, and by the middle of the XVI century there were already 30 people.

In 1542, the brothers built the main church of the monastery - All Saints. Since the XVII century, the monastery began to gradually decline and remained in this state until 1961, when a new brotherhood headed by the famous figure of the Greek Church Kallinikos settled on its territory.
