Church of Panagia Mavriotissa

Siomou, Kastoria 52100, Greece 45 m

Description:

Not far from the city center of Kastoria is the church of Panagia Mavriotissa. The church was built in the distant 1082 under the Byzantine emperor Alexius Comnenus I. A hundred years later, the temple was richly decorated with exterior frescoes. Unfortunately, time takes its toll and over the past centuries the frescoes have undergone considerable destruction. Surprisingly, only those sections of frescoes that have always been on the most illuminated parts of the church are well preserved.

From the inside, the church of Panagia Mavriotissa is also lavishly decorated - it was painted by six icon painters, each of whom had their own unique technique of drawing.

Not so long ago, the church of Panagia Mavriotissa acquired a rare engraved plate made in the name of the monastery. The artifact was discovered by accident in Bulgaria.
