Lake Stymphalia
northeast of Peloponnese, nom Corinthia, Greece
Description:
Lake Stymphalia is located in the northeastern part of the Peloponnese on a mountain plateau. It is one of the largest lakes on the island. From Corinth, 42 kilometers. The total area is 3.5 square kilometers. Mentions of the lake are found in ancient myths. In particular, its name is associated with the third feat of Hercules - the destruction of the Stymphalian birds. In ancient times, it played a huge role – it supplied water to Corinth through a special aqueduct. It was built during the reign of Hadrian. Today it is swamped, overgrown with reeds. In the summer there is almost no water. In winter, when the water level rises, flocks of rare birds flock here. Nearby there is a museum where you can learn about the history of the lake, about the fauna and flora of this region. Protected by NATURA 2000. You can get there by taxi, rented car, paid tourist transfer.
