Saint Meteora: History and Spiritual Meaning

Meteora is not just beautiful rocks and monasteries, it is one of the most powerful spiritual centers of Greece. Here, on the tops of huge sandstone pillars, there are six active monasteries, four male and two female. These monasteries were built in the XIV-XV centuries and became a symbol of the spiritual revival of Greece. On Meteors you will experience the majesty of nature and architecture, as well as an indescribable atmosphere of silence and prayer.

During the tour you will visit:

  • The Great Meteor (Megalo Meteor) is the oldest and largest monastery of Meteor, built in the XIV century. Here you can see ancient frescoes and icons, as well as learn about the life of monks and their spiritual practice.

  • Varlaam Monastery is the second largest monastery, founded in 1517. This place is known not only for its architecture, but also for its rich collection of icons and historical relics.

Meteors are a place to see with your own eyes. Climbing to the peaks where hermits once prayed, you can feel the connection with higher forces and feel the power of spirituality. The monasteries have retained their unique character, and many of them serve as places of prayer and pilgrimage to this day.

Church of St. Nicholas in Vunen

The place that the group will also visit is the village of Vunen, located in the Larissa region, near Meteor. This historic site is associated with the great events of the Ottoman Empire, when many Orthodox saints and martyrs gave their lives for the faith.

Here, on the site of the martyrdom of St. Nicholas the New (or Nicholas the Greek), miracles were performed, and many believers feel a special energy here. Human blood flowing from trees, which defies scientific explanation, is one of the most amazing phenomena of this place. The temple of St. Nicholas in Vunen attracts pilgrims and believers, and many talk about the incredible emotional experience that they experience here.
