Marathon Valley. The Marathon Museum.
Description:
Marathon Valley is located on the east coast of the Attica region, at a distance of 40 kilometers from Athens. This is one of the historical places of ancient Greece, associated with the events of the 490th year BC, when the Marfon Valley by order of the Persian king Darius landed 130 thousand army, which posed a serious danger to the Athenians. The city defense organization was entrusted to the strategist Miltiad. Despite his advanced age, an experienced warrior, who repeatedly participated in campaigns, perfectly coped with his task. He knew the Persian language, the tactics of the Persian struggle, and even knew Darius himself. The forces of the enemies were unequal: the Athenians together with the allies were 12 thousand soldiers, the Persians - 130 thousand. Thanks to the skillful use of the landscape, the psychological impact on the enemy, as well as the correct location of the soldiers, the mistakes of the enemy, and, most importantly, the faith of the Athenians in support of their gods and heroes, they managed to win a brilliant victory.
In the marathon battle participates the messenger Filipidis. He returns to Athens to tell his compatriots the joyous news of victory. This event in modern times served as an impetus to the birth of marathon running. During the tour, we also get acquainted with the prehistoric royal burial ground, the archaeological museum and the mound, where the Athenians who died during the battle in the Marathon Valley in 490 BC are buried.
Then we will make a stop at the Olympic site 2004, created for rowing. It is located in the area of Schinea. This is the place where the Persians suffered a brutal defeat in 490 BC.
