Akronafplia - fortress Itz - Calais

Greece, Peloponnese, Nafplion.

Description:

The fortress of Akronafplia, also known as Itz Calais, is located on a high hill above the city of Nafplion. The gates of the fort, built in the XV century, are decorated with a beautiful bas-relief with a drawing of a Venetian lion. Near the gate is an ancient acropolis.

The fortress of Akronafplia was built in the 1710s. It is the oldest and largest fortress in Greece. Akronafplia was conquered twice: the Turks in 1715 and the Greek rebels in 1822.

Translated from Turkish itz-Kale means "inner fortress". Of the four towers of the fort, only a few fragments survived. For some time the fort was used as a prison for political prisoners, in our time the fortress was converted into a hotel.
