Nafplio

Burtzi Fortress

Greece, Peloponnese, Bay of Nafplion.

Description:

A kind of visiting card of Nafplion is the sea fortress of Burdzi. It was built by Venetian architect Antonio Gambello in 1473. It stands on the small island of Saints Theodores, it is also called the Fortified Tower, since the construction of the fortress was conceived as a fortification. Its main task was to protect against pirates. The castle had three floors that connected portable stairs and two entrances. The name "Burdzi" (translated as "tower") the fortress owes to the Turks. With the help of a mound of stones, they blocked the entrance to enemy ships. In 1821, the fort was turned into a residence. It was rebuilt in the 1930-1970s, and a luxury hotel and restaurant were opened there. Today, concerts, festivals and other cultural events are held in the fortress.

You can get to this place from the city port by boat.
