Description:

The island of Naxos is considered one of the fertile, which the locals attribute to the help of the goddess of fertility. The temple of Demeter is the main sanctuary of the island, which must be visited. It dates from the sixth century BC and in style resembles the Parthenon. The rectangular base is a unique architectural example of that time. The inscriptions on the walls confirm that in ancient times Demeter, Parsephone and Apollo were worshipped here. In the sixth century AD, the temple was rebuilt into a Christian basilica, but the name of Demeter firmly entrenched behind it. The farmland around is famous for its harvests.
