Santorini and the ancient city of Akrotiri as the cradle of the Minotaur civilization
Description:
Walking tour through the streets of the “dead Atlantis” – the ancient city of Akrotiri, one of the most impressive archaeological sites of the Aegean world. This unique city impresses with multi-storey houses more than 3,500 years old, a developed water supply and sewage system, exquisite frescoes and a society in which, according to researchers, the matriarchy played an important role.
During the tour we will talk about the Minotaur and Minoan civilization, the social structure of the Aegean Islands and the peculiarities of the culture of the Bronze Age. You will look into a keyhole leading to 4000 years ago and witness the daily life of people of the past: learn how they lived, traded, what they believed, what traditions they followed and what technologies they used.
You will see houses that are up to 3700 years old and reveal the secrets of earthquake-resistant architecture that was ahead of its time. The famous frescoes of Akrotiri will appear before you – bright and vivid images that, despite millennia, seem ready to come down from the walls and come alive before our eyes.
We will talk about the last days of life in Santorini and try to understand how and why residents left their city shortly before the catastrophic eruption of the volcano. Special attention will be paid to the mystery of Atlantis: could Santorini really be the legendary island of Plato or Atlantis was in a completely different part of the world?
Important information: The tour is held in a pedestrian format on the territory of the Akrotiri Archaeological Park (covered area). You can get to the park by taxi, rented car or public transport.
