peloponnese

Argolid

Description:

The Peloponnese peninsula, or the island of Pelops. To the south-west of Athens in the haze looms its outlines, and the passage to them is only one - the cramped Corinth Canal 80 meters high and 10 meters deep - an engineering "miracle" of the 19th century.

Immediately beyond Corinth, the ancient Argolis is the patrimony of the Argosian kings, among whom the most powerful was the Atreus family. We will visit the oldest fortress-city in Europe - Mycenae, whose walls were built by one-eyed cyclops. Under the walls of this city, the brave Agamemnon gathered an army and went to war on Troy. After 10 years, the same walls met the victor, and the chief physician of his army was Machaon, the son of the god Asclepius. You will visit the Lion's Gate - a symbol of the first throne of the city founded by Perseus - the son of Zeus and Danai, the mine and dome tombs of the second millennium BC, a museum with a rich collection of exhibits, most of which were excavated by Heinrich Schliemann.

Near Mycenae, Epidaurus is the world’s first medical sanatorium with a theater of the 4th century BC with unique acoustics, a spa, a stadium and a sanctuary. In the Epidaurus Museum you will learn about the intricacies of ancient medicine and all types of therapy that have survived to this day.

Then, past the ancient Mycenaean harbor of Tirinth, we will drive to the sea to the city of Navplion, built by Venetian citizens on the shores of the Aegean Sea. A walk around the city will take you to southern Italy for a while, and the smells and tastes of wafer Italian ice cream from Marcello will hardly leave anyone indifferent. You will learn the history of the first capital of New Greece, the first king and queen, the first pharmacy, school, hospital and even the fire department.

During the tour, it is planned to stop for lunch in a traditional village tavern.
