Two-day excursion: Corfu - the island of aristocrats

Description:

The classic Greek beauty of Corfu has fascinated sailors, travelers, aristocrats and artists for centuries. Venetians, French and English left behind a legacy of architecture, culture, life and gastronomy. Today, Corfu is an interweaving of eras and cultures; a mixture of traditional Orthodox Greece with the cosmopolitan trends of Western Europe.

The first day is to get acquainted with the city.

As soon as you step into the atmospheric old city of Corfu, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you will enter a fairytale world. You will hear the footsteps of kings, nobles and knights who once walked on paved pavements. And the interweaving of narrow streets will lead you to the church of St. Spyridon, the patron saint of the city and one of the most revered Christian saints. The port of Corfu, one of the most fortified ports in the Mediterranean, is dominated by the Old and New Fortress. An ideal place to enjoy panoramic views of the city and the majestic Ionian Sea.

The islet of Pontikonisi and the monastery of Vlaherna near the coast of Cape Canoni are some of the most famous and photographed sights of Kerkyra. Having visited here, you will not only enjoy the picturesque landscapes, but also be able to take truly unique photos (including with aircraft flying literally a few meters above the Vlaherna Monastery).

In the evening, everyone is waiting for a trip to the north of the island, where on the edge of a sheer cliff in the town of Perulades, a majestic panorama of sea expanses and the most romantic sunset opens from the observation deck.

The second day is to explore the island.

The day will begin with an acquaintance with the traditional production of kumquat liqueurs and sweets, which have long become the hallmark of the island and are widely exported to Europe. Next you will find Paleokastritsa, a favorite place of all guests of Corfu and locals. Unique coastline with a large number of lagoons and grottoes; olive and cypress forests; sandy beaches - all this makes a small village in the center of attraction for thousands of visitors. Here, on a steep cliff, there is a male monastery Zoodohu Pigis, the history of which will be interesting not only to pilgrims.

The final touch will be a visit to the Achilleon Palace, the summer residence of the Austrian Empress Elizabeth (Sissi). It is undoubtedly one of the most famous royal mansions in Europe. It was built in 1890 by Italian architects Rafaele Carrito and Antonio Landi and named after Achilles, Elizabeth's favorite hero. Around the palace are lush gardens, dominated by bright bougainvillea and tall palm trees. In the gardens there are a large number of sculptures, the most remarkable of which are dedicated to the same Achilles.
