Individual excursion to Meteora

Description:

Meteors in Greek means “floating in the air”. The complex of rock monasteries is located on the outskirts of the Thessaly Plain. Founded in the 14th century by Saint Athanasius of Meteora, like the Athos monastic state, it is known today all over the world. Along with the Acropolis of Athens, Meteora is the most popular of the Greek excursion routes. Here, any visitor (even a Chinese tourist with a fixed camera) becomes a little pilgrim.

The spiritual wealth of Orthodox Byzantium has been preserved here in all its splendor. Monasteries today are not just architectural monuments of the past, but lead a full-fledged monastic life, educating and strengthening pilgrims who come to them. They contribute to the continuation of the traditions of Byzantine church art. There are several large icon painting workshops in Meteora, a visit to which is also possible. Of the once more than twenty monasteries, six are active today: four male and two female.

Until relatively recently, it was possible to climb these stone pillars aspiring to the sky only with considerable skill, along wooden and rope stairs. The inaccessibility of monasteries and the isolation of the hermit life of monks who struggle not at the tops of monolithic giants have preserved the monastery for many centuries of the difficult and not at all peaceful history of Thessaly. In the first half of the 20th century, a highway was laid to the monasteries and steps were built, making access to the monasteries possible for a significant number of travelers.

Having satisfied the spiritual hunger in Meteora, at the foot of the rocks in the picturesque Kalambak, travelers will be able to strengthen their physical strength by dining in one of the traditional taverns of the village.

On the way from Meteor to Thessaloniki, in the Tembi gorge, it is worth visiting the Church of St. Paraskeva (Fridays). Cave temple with a small icon of St. Paraskeva in it, discovered miraculously not so long ago, is also famous for its source of water, healing for people with visual illness.
