Thessaloniki

Monasteries and temples of Thessaloniki and suburbs

Description:

Greece in general and Thessaloniki in particular are considered the heirs of Christian Byzantium. It is the only country in the modern world where Orthodoxy is constitutionally enshrined as a state religion. The Church and Orthodoxy are an integral part of the life of not only the population (98% of whom are Orthodox Christians), but also the state.

Christianity came to Greece with the sermons of the Apostle Paul, who in 49 entered Thessaloniki and by the force of his word converted part of the locals to his faith. For nearly 300 years, Christians preached their religion secretly and were persecuted. The fourth century brought great changes to the Roman Empire and, as a result, to the life of Thessaloniki. Persecution of Christians ceases and Christianity becomes the main religion. The capital of the Roman Empire was moved to Constantinople (330), and Byzantine Thessaloniki became an important religious center.

A trip to the monasteries and temples of Thessaloniki and the suburbs includes visiting sites of interest from both the historical and religious sides. The tour begins at the Church of the Prophet Elijah (14th century), listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Further inspection of the old city, the Byzantine walls and the monastery of Vlatadon, which played a key role in the history of the city and Christianity. Here is the temple of the Apostle Paul and the spring of holy water, named in his honor.

Then you will move to the suburbs of Thessaloniki, where in the town of Suroti there is a monastery of John the Theologian associated with the life and work of the Elder Paisius of Athos. The grave of the elder, listed as a saint, is located on the territory of the monastery and attracts a huge number of pilgrims from all over the world. At the end of the route, you will visit the Monastery of Anastasia Uzoreshtelnitsa, one of the most revered saints of the Orthodox world. Within the walls of the monastery there are rare artifacts and relics of saints.
