To know and love Thessaloniki!
Description:
Ask any resident of the northern capital of Greece why they love their city. It is unlikely that you will be answered by a long list of historical sights and monuments of Thessaloniki. You will not hear praises of urban architecture or descriptions of favorite places in the city. Most likely, you will be answered with a short phrase, which can be translated from Greek roughly as “There is no other such city (in the world)!” And while this phrase sounds rather pretentious, it best describes this city.
For almost two and a half thousand years of its history, Thessaloniki has experienced many cultures and eras, each of which left its imprint on the appearance and soul of the metropolis. A city with a unique atmosphere, penetrating through millennia of history and concrete structures of modernity.
The capital of the Macedonian kingdom, the center of the Roman province and the city of the Emperor, the cultural capital of Byzantium and the Ottoman bastion, the “Mother of Israel” and the birthplace of Turkish (!!!!!!) democracy, the youth capital of Europe – all this is Thessaloniki!
Orthodox churches and ancient monasteries, Byzantine towers and minarets, “new classics” and dilapidated modernity combine in this city in an amazing way and unobtrusively introduce you to its atmosphere. Unbeknownst to yourself, suddenly you become a “citizen” of Thessaloniki, even if you live thousands of kilometers away.
Of course, there are places in Thessaloniki that are simply, as it is fashionable today to say, “mast si” – that is, you need to visit: The Byzantine walls of the Upper City, the White Tower, the Basilica of St. Demetrius, the Roman Forum and the Arch of Galeria. But in addition to these classic sightseeing places, there are still a huge number of colorful “atmospheric” places that are not known to most tourists.
Try to know and love Thessaloniki as much as we love this city!
