Alatza Imaret Mosque
Platia Dimitrion near Agiou Nikolaou 12-18, Thessaloniki, Greece
Description:
The Aladja Imaret Mosque is located in the central part of Thessaloniki on Kassandra Street near St. Dmitry's Cathedral. This is an artifact from the Ottoman period, dating back to the 15th century (it is written in Arabic at the entrance). In translation, the name means “multicolored shelter”. And indeed, the facade of the building is decorated with different colors of stones. The builders assumed that such a design would be a remedy against spiritual emptiness. Since 1926, the mosque has been officially declared an architectural monument. However, these days it looks abandoned, works irregularly. Its premises are mainly used for various exhibitions. Visitors love this place due to the unusual atmosphere – something between East and West. Since 2011, it has become a shelter for the poor and refugees. Inside are preserved frescoes and images of the 18-19 centuries, stucco and bas-reliefs.
You can take public transport to Agiou Nikolaou Street.
