Roman Agora

Agnostou Stratiotou, Thessaloniki 546 31, Greece

Description:

After visiting the Greek capital, you should definitely walk to the Roman agora. The idea of creating this place belongs to Julius Caesar, but the idea was never realized due to wars and crisis. A new attempt at creation is associated with the name of Octavian Augustus, who was able to turn this place into the center of life of the city. Thanks to the excavations of the early twentieth century, we can see the buildings in their original form. The Roman agora is made in the form of a rectangle around which columns and warehouses are located. Also preserved is the main entrance - the Gate of Athena, made of marble. On them are inscriptions in Greek. The Tower of Winds deserves special attention, its height is 12 meters. The weather vane upstairs and allegorical friezes have come down to us. It was created to find out the direction of the wind for ships. In the beginning of Christianity there was a temple. Also among the ruins are the remains of a fountain, a public toilet, arches, the Church of the Archistrategs. In the latter is a miraculous icon. The Roman agora is located on Panos Street near Hadrian’s library. You can get there by public transport or on foot.
