The Jewish Museum in Thessaloniki

Greece, Thessaloniki, 13 Agiou Mina Street.

About the company:

This Jewish museum of Thessaloniki was founded to preserve Sephardic cultural heritage. After all, many immigrants and refugees came to this Greek city during the exile from Spain. They brought new traditions and cultural heritage to their nation.

The museum is located almost in the center of the city of Thessaloniki, in the Jewish quarter, which in 1917 experienced a great fire. It evolved from a complex matrix of historical circumstances and represents an interesting conglomeration of the historical and cultural heritage of the Jews. The museum’s expositions include permanent collections and regular photo exhibitions. Among them are monumental stones and inscriptions found on the ruins of a Jewish necropolis. Each of the exhibits gives an idea of the religious and everyday life of the Jewish community of the city, about life in the camps of Poland.

On its territory there is a special center that digitizes archival documents from the museum’s own collection. In the fund of the museum are rare books printed in Thessaloniki in the XVI century, telling about Jewish life. In addition, the museum conducts not only daily excursions, but also organizes educational programs for the younger generation.
