Gorge of the Dead
Description:
The Gorge of the Dead is a small canyon located near Sitia. It is quite large, the length is more than a hundred kilometers. The beginning takes from the small village of Ano Zakrosi stretches to Kato Zakros. In appearance, these are two ridges of mountains that intertwine with each other, and below there is a narrow path. The slopes are uneven, with collapsed boulders.
The name refers to Minoan times (2000 BC). It was then used as a huge cemetery. During the excavations, archaeologists found here the remains of tombs, the ruins of the Minoan Palace, an ancient villa. Millions of tourists come to Sitia to see this miracle.
You can get to the gorge by car on the national road to Sitia, and then turn on the signs to Zakros. There's parking in front of the gorge. You can walk along the trails from neighboring villages.
