Sounion

Cape Sounion.

Description:

Cape Sounion is the southernmost point of the Attica region, where the temple of the god Poseidon is located. During the tour, we will have the opportunity to make sure of the ideal choice of a place that fits the image of the deity revered here - the god of the seas and oceans Poseidon. His sanctuary was built on a rock 60 meters above the sea, and on all sides it was surrounded by the water surface of the Aegean Sea. On the south side, the water stretches to the horizon. From the east you can see the island of Makronisos. From the west - the island of St. George, the island of Aegina, the island of Patroclus. On the north side there is a picturesque bay with a sandy beach. In ancient times there was a port, which was used for the needs of the Athenian fleet.

Cape Sounion is mentioned in Homer, is closely associated with the mythology of the ancient Hellenes. Today, columns of the temple of Poseidon, built in the middle of the 5th century BC, are preserved here. Thanks to the archaeologist Valery Stay in 1888, the temple was partially restored. For the restoration of the temple, ancient column drums were used, which were scattered throughout the territory, and some were even raised from the bottom of the sea.

Our route from Athens to Cape Sounion has a length of 60 km, runs along the shore of the Saronic Gulf. Passing the Vuljagmeni district, we will make a small stop at a warm lake. The indentation of the shores of the Saronic Gulf will give us the opportunity to admire the picturesque landscapes of the sea, beaches, suburban areas and hotel complexes.
