Mtskheta and Uplistsikhe: A Journey to Ancient Origins

Description:

The ancient capital of Georgia - the city of Mtskheta - still keeps historical and cultural evidence of its thousand-year rich biography. Here you can see traces of three historical periods: antiquity, the early Middle Ages and the late Middle Ages. The monuments we will visit are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

On the route of the tour - the ruins of the ancient city-fortress Armazistsikhe on Mount Bagineti. Unfortunately, tourists rarely visit this place. Archaeological excavations have been conducted on Mount Bagineti for decades, the baths of the king and queen, a wine cellar, a hexaspide temple, a sarcophagus, etc. have been discovered. Once in ancient times there were pagan idols here. Next, we will visit the ancient temple of the 6th century Jvari, admire the magnificent panorama of the confluence of two rivers - Aragvi and Kura. We will walk around the city-museum of Mtskheta, visit the temple of the 11th century Svetitskhoveli and other iconic places of this city. Then we will go to the ancient rock cult city Uplistsikhe (Fortress of God), dedicated to the Goddess of the Sun. It is a rare monument with three thousand years of history.
