Svetitskhoveli Cathedral
Description:
Svetitskhoveli Cathedral is located 25 km from Tbilisi. It dates back to the 11th century. The history of the temple is full of mysteries and legends. It's an Orthodox shrine. There are frescoes from the 16th century. First, a wooden church was built here, which became the first Christian temple. The location was not chosen by chance.
Part of the Christ chiton fell into the hands of the Mtskheta king Elioz, who presented the holy relic to his sister Sidonia. Taking the cloth in his hands, the woman immediately died. They buried her with a flap, and not her grave grew a cedar with healing properties. After a while, Saint Nina asked the king to build a temple at the burial place. During the construction of the cedar began to flow. So the name of the cathedral appeared – “Life-giving pillar”.
The facades are decorated with ornaments, around - a stone wall. In addition to the chiton, the holy relics presented in the cathedral are the cloak of the prophet Elijah, a particle of the relics of Andrew the First-Called, a list from the Tsilkan Icon of the Mother of God. You can get from Tbilisi by taxi from the metro station "Didube", by rented car, taxi, tourist transfer.
